The beach is often a huge source of entertainment on a hot summer’s day. When we think of the beach we think of swimming, paddling in the water, and sun baking, however there are many more things that you can do at the beach as well.
Building sandcastles is often thought as something to let the children do, but it can be just as fun for grown ups too. Many beaches offer activities that can include sand castle-building competitions especially during the summer peak periods. Unlike when we are children, older people have the capacity and probably the patience as well to make a mere sandcastle into a masterpiece. Another thing you can do in the sand is to dig a hole and see how far down you can go and what little sea creatures may live down there. Kids always enjoy doing this. Be careful not to touch any sea creatures you find though, as they may bite or be poisonous and always remember to fill back in your hole so that no one trips into it and hurts themselves.
The beach is also a great place to play games. One of the best games to play at the beach is Frisbee. You could also play football, soccer, baseball, cricket and so on, although most of these games do require at least several people to play them. Playing sport on the sand is good as the soft surface is low impact and not so harsh on the body. Try to think of games you can play in the water as well when it gets to hot under the sun. Take along a ball that you do not mind getting wet and try playing catch while sitting in the water with the waves coming in.
The beach and the ocean are one of the great beauties of the world. Try taking time out to just sit and watch the water and the waves as they come in towards the sand. Or take a walk along the beach and breath in the fresh sea air and take in the view. It is always interesting to watch other people at the beach. The beach is often a carefree kind of place and it is always fun to watch children (and sometimes adults too) play and enjoy the environment.
Taking your dog to the beach can also be lots of fun. Be sure to check that the beach allows animals before you do so though. Many beaches will not allow animals or will allow them in the surrounding area, but will prohibit them on the beach itself. The easiest way to know is to check the beach signs or you could ring the local council before you go.
Another great thing you can do at the beach with your children is to look for shells and driftwood or other interesting bits and pieces that may wash up along the shore. This can be rather educational for your children as well. Or if there is a rocky area with rock pools, take a walk carefully around and see what sea creatures live in the area. Once again, remember not to touch the sea creatures or disturb their habitat.
There is just so much to do and enjoy at the beach. Always remember to swim in the correct areas and to be aware of sea wildlife and their surrounding habitat. Everything about the beach sends the message of fun, so think of some new and exciting things you can do at the beach and enjoy yourself. Don’t forget to go for a swim too!
