Installing another doorbell in your home is a very simple, easy project that anyone can do that makes things better for you and your visitors if you have recently created a new entrance or have a back door that many people come to even though the doorbell is on the front door.

The first step is to take your existing doorbell and open up the cover on the striker that is mounted on your wall, probably in your living room. Behind the cover will be the striker as well as the hole to go down to the cellar where the wiring connects to. The big part of the entire project is trying to snake another wire down through the same hole to the cellar so that you don't have to remove any drywall or create a larger hole in the wall or in the ceiling of the basement.

Fishing a wire down through the hole can be made easier by using a straightened coat hanger that you can use to tape the front of the wire to to have a firmer object to force down through the hole towards the cellar.

Once the wire is fed through the hole and comes out with the wire that starts at the fuse box and goes to the doorbell striker area, it can be rerouted to the new area.

Essentially, you will not be distrubing any of the existing wiring that is there to wire the first doorbell. There is probably a wire that goes from the fuse box, to the striker plate box mounted on the wall and then to the doorbell itself outside.

The new wire will start from the striker plate box and will be connected to the second set of connections that most boxes are built with to support two doorbells. The difference in connections will be one ding or two.

The new wire will then snake from the box, down through the cellar, which is generally the easier area to feed wires through unless you have another available crawlspace or attic type area that is accessible from the original wired box.

The new wire will be taken from the cellar and routed to the new location for the new doorbell. Most doorbells can be mounted onto the house by drilling a small hole and using just a couple of screws. The wire is a simple wire that only generally has two wires connecting to the doorbell screws in the back of the doorbell assembly. The connections are pretty easy to do but really should not be made unless you first have turned off the fuse for that circuit or disconnecting the wire from that fuse area.

The whole process is quite simple to complete from start to finish. The toughest part will probably be trying to fish the wire down through the wall to go from the doorbell mounted on your living room wall down to the basement. Completing this process while you are building your house or remoldeling can make it quite a bit easier to do this step.

The possibilities are opened up when you complete this new entryway. You will have to take the next step to create a new walkway or design to route visitors to your new entrace opposed to your old one. Once all the connections are made you can use your new entrance and allow visitors to access that area more easily instead of going to your single entrance.
