Ivo Andri'c, recipient of the 1961 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Travnik, Bosnia. His father died when he was three years old, and he was reared by his mother and aunt. He joined the student organization MLADA BOSNA (YOUNG BOSNIA) in his youth. He spent three years in prison after he was arrested in 1914 because of his revolutionary alliances. He was educated at the Universities of Zagreb, Vienna, Krakow, and Graz.
Andri'c published his first book, EX PONTO, when he was 26. He gained his reputation as a writer with the Bosnian trilogy which consists of TRAVNICKA CHRONIKA (BOSNIAN CHRONICLE), NA DRINI CUPRIJA (THE BRIDGE ON THE DRINA), and GOSPODJICA (THE WOMAN FROM SARAJEVO).
Ivo Andri'c died in Belgrade in 1975.
